A large dark blue coffee mug with the words Plan, Review, Adapt sits in front of value investing books and next to a laptop open to ETF Channel, on this home office desk; the investor has a notepad and pen, and has written portfolio allocation and ETF notes.

Looking at the underlying holdings of the ETFs in our coverage universe at ETF Channel, we have compared the trading price of each holding against the average analyst 12-month forward target price, and computed the weighted average implied analyst target price for the ETF itself. For the Pacer Data and Digital Revolution ETF (TRFK), we found that the implied analyst target price for the ETF based upon its underlying holdings is $61.01 per unit.

With TRFK trading at a recent price near $55.43 per unit, that means that analysts see 10.07% upside for this ETF looking through to the average analyst targets of the underlying holdings. Three of TRFK's underlying holdings with notable upside to their analyst target prices are DXC Technology Co (DXC), Silicon Motion Technology Corp (SIMO), and Varonis Systems, Inc (VRNS). Although DXC has traded at a recent price of $14.76/share, the average analyst target is 10.94% higher at $16.38/share. Similarly, SIMO has 10.50% upside from the recent share price of $71.49 if the average analyst target price of $79.00/share is reached, and analysts on average are expecting VRNS to reach a target price of $54.83/share, which is 10.31% above the recent price of $49.71. Below is a twelve month price history chart comparing the stock performance of DXC, SIMO, and VRNS:

DXC, SIMO, and VRNS Relative Performance Chart

Below is a summary table of the current analyst target prices discussed above:

Name Symbol Recent Price Avg. Analyst 12-Mo. Target % Upside to Target
Pacer Data and Digital Revolution ETF TRFK $55.43 $61.01 10.07%
DXC Technology Co DXC $14.76 $16.38 10.94%
Silicon Motion Technology Corp SIMO $71.49 $79.00 10.50%
Varonis Systems, Inc VRNS $49.71 $54.83 10.31%

Are analysts justified in these targets, or overly optimistic about where these stocks will be trading 12 months from now? Do the analysts have a valid justification for their targets, or are they behind the curve on recent company and industry developments? A high price target relative to a stock's trading price can reflect optimism about the future, but can also be a precursor to target price downgrades if the targets were a relic of the past. These are questions that require further investor research.
