Solazyme is engaged in making oil. Co.'s technology transforms a range of plant-based sugars into oils. Co.'s renewable products can replace or improve oils derived from three existing sources: petroleum, plants, and animal fats. By feeding Co.'s oil-producing microalgae plant sugars in dark fermentation tanks, Co. is utilizing indirect photosynthesis in contrast to the open-pond approaches. Co.'s platform can utilize a variety of renewable plant-based sugars, such as sugarcane-based sucrose, corn-based dextrose, and sugar from other sustainable biomass sources including cellulosics. Co. also produces and sells bioproducts from the protein, fiber and other compounds produced by microalgae.
