Peabody Energy engages in the mining of thermal coal and metallurgical coal. Co.'s mining operations are located in the U.S. and Australia, and include equity-affiliate mining operations in Australia and Venezuela. Co. also markets, brokers coal from other coal producers, and trades coal, freight and freight-related contracts. Co.'s other energy related commercial activities include participating in operations of a mine-mouth coal-fueled generating plant, the management of its coal reserve and real estate holdings, and the development of Btu conversion and clean coal technologies. At Dec 31 2012, Co. had 9.23 billion tons of proven and probable coal reserves.

Coal fell on hard times thanks in large part to the development of more cost-effective and plentiful natural gas reserves. But now, with natural gas prices at multi-year highs and double the price low made last year, coal has become more attractive as an energy source to produce electricity for utilities.
Coal miner Peabody Energy Corp. (NYSE: BTU) has dropped more than 40% in less than eight months, from its November high near $30 per share to under $17.
